“Ravages of Time” by Alan Newbery (Blues Artist from Australia)

"Ravages of Time" is a true-to-its-roots blues-rock/folk album from Australian singer/songwriter Alan Newbery. Newbery draws his influence from classic rock and traditional blues artists and gives it a modern edge, with an overall reminiscence to Van Morrison and Neil Young. The arrangements are solid and full, as Newbery professionally incorporates electric guitar solos, finger-picking acoustic guitar, heavy bass lines, slick vocal flavoring, piano, saxophone, and a string section into the album. The lyrics are creative and entertaining as he reflects on many aspects of life, including faith, love, freedom, and staying strong through tough times. "Ravages of Time" is well-produced with a nice and clean overall sound. "So Lucky" has a great melody and memorable lyrics about being grateful for life, as Newbery matches the acoustic guitar note for note with his vocal performance. "Twice As Nice" is a straight up blues track about the pleasures of life with a great punch line of a chorus. Overall, "Ravages of Time" is an extraordinary album with a great bluesy vocal performance and excellent, full arrangements. Fans of roots blues and folk rock should definitely give Alan Newbery a try.

"It's Probably Me" by Vincent Lynch (Blues/Jazz artist from Ireland)

Vincent Lynch's "It's Probably Me" is an EP that features Vincent's excellent musical talents, across multiple genres, from blues to pop. There is quite a lot of variation present on this 4-track EP: It starts with a remake of "I Got the Music in Me" with a jazz-influenced piano progression dubbed with an electronica/dance sound. Next, the EP moves to a bluesy electric guitar riff fused with a solid brass section on track 2. Then, Vincent presents a simple, clean acoustic sound on track 3. And finally the EP closes out with a dance club remix version of "I Got the Music in Me." Lynch's vocals are quite similar to the blues-oriented vocals of Eric Clapton. The lyrics of the 2 original tracks are strong. The bluesy, heartbreaking "Story of the Blues" displays Lynch's lyrical prowess when he sings, "Everybody knows what the blues is all about." More aesthetically pleasing is the simple, acoustic title track, which shows Lynch at his lyrical and musical best. "It's Probably Me" is a beautiful acoustic number with a tidal wave of mood setting sounds. No matter the sound, light and acoustic or loud and electronic, the EP displays Lynch's musical talents. If you have eclectic musical tastes and enjoy hearing a new talented artist, give this EP a try. http://www.radioindy.com/bands/4586/

"Mr. B" by Tomislav Goluban & Little Pigeon's ForHill Blues (Blues artist from Croatia)

"Mr. B." is an outstanding, enlivening, and original blues album from Croatia's own Tomislav Goluban & Little Pigeon's ForHill Blues. This album is comprised of sixteen harmonica-led blues jams that incorporate acoustic and steel guitar, drums, kazoo, muted trumpet, and a plethora of other instruments to create consistently solid arrangements. The overall sound is truly original, combining an authentic Cajun/delta blues sound with elements particular to Croatian music, with lyrics sung in Croatian on the first half of the album and in English on the second half. The songs are all great, entertaining and enjoyable, with the harmonica driving each song and drawing from the likes of Hot Tuna and Sonny Terry. The recording quality is also quite good and a perfect fit for the type of sound Little Pigeon's ForHill Blues are trying to create. "T-Train Kick" introduces the album nicely with the harmonica and drums, perfectly imitating the takeoff of a train from a station. "Sv. Rok" is a slower track with Croatian lyrics that is backed by acoustic guitar, muted trumpet, and features a nice harmonica solo. "See You Later Alligator" shifts the album to a more American blues sound, with entertaining English lyrics, an absurd vocal range, and great vocal layering. Tomislav Goluban & Little Pigeon's ForHill Blues have crafted an enjoyable, memorable, and truly original blues album with "Mr. B." Fans of delta blues with a Croatian flare, pick up this album and prepare to wear it out.

“Out of ConFusion” by ConFused 5 (Blues artist from Austria)

"Out of ConFusion" is a timeless, guitar-driven blues-rock album with clear '70s rock influence from Austrian quintet ConFused 5. One thing is for certain: there is no confusion in ConFused 5's musical capabilities. First formed in 1981 under the name Frust, the members of ConFused 5 have made their rounds in the musical world and deliver as professionals would on each track of this album. The '70s influenced arrangements are accompanied by great vocal performances and outstanding harmonic group vocals on many of the choruses, resulting in an overall sound reminiscent of Deep Purple. The songs are enjoyably distortion heavy, with catchy choruses and a great timeless quality. "Out of ConFusion" is also well-produced and meant to be played loudly. "Because of You" is a bluesy number with great guitar solos and the catchy chorus, "All the things we do/We do because of you." "Why Me" incorporates the saxophone and organ into the melodic arrangement. It also features great storytelling lyrics about the redundancy of life and the lyricists incredulousness towards it. "No One" is a reggae rock track reminiscent of The Clash and The Police with more great group vocals. Ironically, ConFused 5 appears to be certain in their talent and musical abilities and deliver on each and every track of "Out of ConFusion." Fans of blues-rock, with a '70s influence, you're going to want to check this one out.

"Three" by Ken Macy (Blues Artist from Massachusetts(MA))

"Three" is a soulful blues-rock EP from talented multi-instrumentalist Ken Macy. Macy lays down the vocals and all of the guitar work on this EP and with the assistance of Kevin Haverty on drums, he has crafted some great blues-rock tracks. His pitch is that of a tenor, making for a unique and memorable vocal performance, though the soulfulness of his voice and the content of his songs are similar to Eric Clapton's style of blues. "Three" is filled with tender harmonies and songs about love and heartbreak, dreams and drinking. This EP was also self-produced by Macy, giving him the final say-so on the overall sound. The result is something to take pride in, both as a musician and as a producer. "Out Of My Life" is a song of heartbreak, of good times and bad times and putting a situation out of his hands. Look for a great rhythmic blues sound in this one in particular. "Queen-Bee" features Dave Kurdzionak on the saxophone, great metaphoric lyrics, and is a great collaboration of intermittent sax solos and the underlying blues arrangement. Overall, "Three" is a great EP with a unique, soulful vocal and an intense blues-rock feel that would make for an non-regrettable addition to any collection.
