"Three" by Ken Macy (Blues Artist from Massachusetts(MA))

RadioIndy is pleased to present Ken Macy with a GrIndie Award for the CD "Three"

"Three" is a soulful blues-rock EP from talented multi-instrumentalist Ken Macy. Macy lays down the vocals and all of the guitar work on this EP and with the assistance of Kevin Haverty on drums, he has crafted some great blues-rock tracks. His pitch is that of a tenor, making for a unique and memorable vocal performance, though the soulfulness of his voice and the content of his songs are similar to Eric Clapton's style of blues. "Three" is filled with tender harmonies and songs about love and heartbreak, dreams and drinking. This EP was also self-produced by Macy, giving him the final say-so on the overall sound. The result is something to take pride in, both as a musician and as a producer. "Out Of My Life" is a song of heartbreak, of good times and bad times and putting a situation out of his hands. Look for a great rhythmic blues sound in this one in particular. "Queen-Bee" features Dave Kurdzionak on the saxophone, great metaphoric lyrics, and is a great collaboration of intermittent sax solos and the underlying blues arrangement. Overall, "Three" is a great EP with a unique, soulful vocal and an intense blues-rock feel that would make for an non-regrettable addition to any collection.-Chris & the RadioIndy.com Review Team

"Rekindled" by Lo Torc (Rock Artist from Colorado(CO))

If you like to hear albums that contain different styles of music you'll want to listen to "Rekindled" by Lo Torc. When you take distinct music genres such as soft rock, jazz, blues, country, and funk and merge them into one album you'll get a whole new world of music. Vocals are sung with clarity and style to which the music was written for. The general quality of the album is clean and well-produced. Try a little funk with some syncopated rhythms and soulful harmonies in "Sexy Lady." Creativity in incorporating the usage of different instruments throughout this collection is a great embellishment. If you're into the big band sounds, take a listen to "I Need a Cuppa Joe" and "I Need You" as the horn section blows out catchy fills in riffs. For fans of soft rock, jazz, blues, country, and funk, "Rekindled" by Lo Torc will be very much enjoyed.

“Game Of Life” by The Teague Stefan Band (Blues Artist from Florida(FL))

The sophomore effort from Central Florida's power trio "The Teague Stefan Band" entitled "Game Of Life" combines elements of blues, rock, and funk to create a highly original, fresh sound. The album is a collection of aggressive, pounding tracks full of intoxicating heart and soul. Teague Stefan, the gifted songwriter, vocalist and guitarist for this trio, employs his talents in both musicianship and composition. The songs are well-written and performed with an enthusiasm and spirit that shines through on each track. "The Leavin' Blues" is a blistering opener, with a strong groove and blazing guitar work. The production is raw and natural, with no post-production trickery. Stefan's dominating guitar is accompanied by drums that are upfront in the mix, providing a powerful, hammering sound. "Tell You Truthful" is a driving shuffle tune with an expressive strut and swagger. "Power Of A Woman" is a soulful blues tune, showcasing Stefan's vocal range as well as his mastery of the guitar. "After the Storm" by Lightin Rod and The Thunderbolts (Blues/Rock Artist from Michigan (MI))

"After the Storm" by Lightin Rod and The Thunderbolts is true classic blues gem. From front to back the album just screams old school blues with amazing licks, strutting bass lines and beats that swagger. The definitely features a full sound with great female backing vocals and sultry saxophone work thrown into the mix. The album also sounds great, with great care taken in amplifying a great natural guitar tone and shaping a great sound around it. The album comes out of the gates strong with "Close To You," a track that encompasses each and every element of the bands frill-less sound and concept. "Bring you back Home" opens with a wicked guitar intro, gritty vocals and great female back up vocals. The standout track on his album has to be "Narcissistic Fool", which features a slick guitar riff, a fantastic plucky bass line and great sax accents. If you are a fan of artists like JJ Cale, Eric Clapton or BB King this is a must pick up. It stands alone as a truly Professional sounding album with some very well written songs and a very talented band to boot.

“Ravages of Time” by Alan Newbery (Blues Artist from Australia)

"Ravages of Time" is a true-to-its-roots blues-rock/folk album from Australian singer/songwriter Alan Newbery. Newbery draws his influence from classic rock and traditional blues artists and gives it a modern edge, with an overall reminiscence to Van Morrison and Neil Young. The arrangements are solid and full, as Newbery professionally incorporates electric guitar solos, finger-picking acoustic guitar, heavy bass lines, slick vocal flavoring, piano, saxophone, and a string section into the album. The lyrics are creative and entertaining as he reflects on many aspects of life, including faith, love, freedom, and staying strong through tough times. "Ravages of Time" is well-produced with a nice and clean overall sound. "So Lucky" has a great melody and memorable lyrics about being grateful for life, as Newbery matches the acoustic guitar note for note with his vocal performance. "Twice As Nice" is a straight up blues track about the pleasures of life with a great punch line of a chorus. Overall, "Ravages of Time" is an extraordinary album with a great bluesy vocal performance and excellent, full arrangements. Fans of roots blues and folk rock should definitely give Alan Newbery a try.

"It's Probably Me" by Vincent Lynch (Blues/Jazz artist from Ireland)

Vincent Lynch's "It's Probably Me" is an EP that features Vincent's excellent musical talents, across multiple genres, from blues to pop. There is quite a lot of variation present on this 4-track EP: It starts with a remake of "I Got the Music in Me" with a jazz-influenced piano progression dubbed with an electronica/dance sound. Next, the EP moves to a bluesy electric guitar riff fused with a solid brass section on track 2. Then, Vincent presents a simple, clean acoustic sound on track 3. And finally the EP closes out with a dance club remix version of "I Got the Music in Me." Lynch's vocals are quite similar to the blues-oriented vocals of Eric Clapton. The lyrics of the 2 original tracks are strong. The bluesy, heartbreaking "Story of the Blues" displays Lynch's lyrical prowess when he sings, "Everybody knows what the blues is all about." More aesthetically pleasing is the simple, acoustic title track, which shows Lynch at his lyrical and musical best. "It's Probably Me" is a beautiful acoustic number with a tidal wave of mood setting sounds. No matter the sound, light and acoustic or loud and electronic, the EP displays Lynch's musical talents. If you have eclectic musical tastes and enjoy hearing a new talented artist, give this EP a try. http://www.radioindy.com/bands/4586/

"Mr. B" by Tomislav Goluban & Little Pigeon's ForHill Blues (Blues artist from Croatia)

"Mr. B." is an outstanding, enlivening, and original blues album from Croatia's own Tomislav Goluban & Little Pigeon's ForHill Blues. This album is comprised of sixteen harmonica-led blues jams that incorporate acoustic and steel guitar, drums, kazoo, muted trumpet, and a plethora of other instruments to create consistently solid arrangements. The overall sound is truly original, combining an authentic Cajun/delta blues sound with elements particular to Croatian music, with lyrics sung in Croatian on the first half of the album and in English on the second half. The songs are all great, entertaining and enjoyable, with the harmonica driving each song and drawing from the likes of Hot Tuna and Sonny Terry. The recording quality is also quite good and a perfect fit for the type of sound Little Pigeon's ForHill Blues are trying to create. "T-Train Kick" introduces the album nicely with the harmonica and drums, perfectly imitating the takeoff of a train from a station. "Sv. Rok" is a slower track with Croatian lyrics that is backed by acoustic guitar, muted trumpet, and features a nice harmonica solo. "See You Later Alligator" shifts the album to a more American blues sound, with entertaining English lyrics, an absurd vocal range, and great vocal layering. Tomislav Goluban & Little Pigeon's ForHill Blues have crafted an enjoyable, memorable, and truly original blues album with "Mr. B." Fans of delta blues with a Croatian flare, pick up this album and prepare to wear it out.

“Out of ConFusion” by ConFused 5 (Blues artist from Austria)

"Out of ConFusion" is a timeless, guitar-driven blues-rock album with clear '70s rock influence from Austrian quintet ConFused 5. One thing is for certain: there is no confusion in ConFused 5's musical capabilities. First formed in 1981 under the name Frust, the members of ConFused 5 have made their rounds in the musical world and deliver as professionals would on each track of this album. The '70s influenced arrangements are accompanied by great vocal performances and outstanding harmonic group vocals on many of the choruses, resulting in an overall sound reminiscent of Deep Purple. The songs are enjoyably distortion heavy, with catchy choruses and a great timeless quality. "Out of ConFusion" is also well-produced and meant to be played loudly. "Because of You" is a bluesy number with great guitar solos and the catchy chorus, "All the things we do/We do because of you." "Why Me" incorporates the saxophone and organ into the melodic arrangement. It also features great storytelling lyrics about the redundancy of life and the lyricists incredulousness towards it. "No One" is a reggae rock track reminiscent of The Clash and The Police with more great group vocals. Ironically, ConFused 5 appears to be certain in their talent and musical abilities and deliver on each and every track of "Out of ConFusion." Fans of blues-rock, with a '70s influence, you're going to want to check this one out.

"The Lonestar Blues" by Tubie Pushe'e (Blues Artist from Texas(TX))

"The Lonestar Blues" is a Texas blues guitar album that features quirky, unique lyrics and jazzy undertones from Tubie Pushe'e. Tubie's voice is a huge part of the sound, delivered with that Texan country twang that shows his personality and forces the listener to lean on every word. The arrangements behind him are skillful and create a relationship between clever lyricist and top-notch musicians you will surely enjoy. The riffs are catchy, and the rhythms are bouncy, with great variance from song to song. The production quality of "The Lonestar Blues" is very good as well, with emphasis placed on truly capturing the rawness of Tubie. Highlights include "Talk to Me Blues," with a driving rhythm, great guitar work, and a lively vocal performance. "Goodbye" touches on the swampy side with a little harmonica, some Tubie twang, and smooth vocals. The title track, "The Lonestar Blues," closes things out nicely with more great guitar work and is as blue as blues can be. With "The Lonestar Blues," Tubie Pushe'e has compiled an album full of unique and enjoyable blues songs. If you enjoy Texas blues with off-the-wall, twangy vocals, give Tubie a listen.

“Heart Worn Sleeve” by B.B. Wolfe (Blues Artist from Michigan(MI))

"Heart Worn Sleeve" is an aptly titled, impressive blues/folk album from B.B. Wolfe. THe CD also showcases the Goldmine Pickers, who bring a slight country flavor to the album as well. The album is stripped down, relying solely on purely acoustic instruments – guitar, banjo, violin, and accordion – to back his sad, storytelling lyrics. Wolfe's lyrics portray a sense of longing, of lost love, of sorrow and sadness, and are the most defining quality of the album. His raspy vocals combined with his folk sound, reliance on acoustic instruments, and longing lyrics, should remind the listener of the classic Dylan album, "Another Side of Bob Dylan." The recording quality is very good as well. Wolfe longs for what could have been on the track "Something Tells Me It's Not True" when he sings, "I've been holding onto this old guitar/I should have been holding you." "In Three-Quarter Time" incorporates the accordion into Wolfe's musical styling, and the song title itself should imply that he knows what he's doing musically. "Heart Worn Sleeve" is an excellent album that displays B.B. Wolfe's powerful storytelling capabilities and should be looked into by anyone who enjoys a good blues/folk/country fusion.

"Old Neighborhood" by Sherman Hunter (Blues Artist from Florida(FL))

"Old Neighborhood" is a soulful classic blues album from Sherman Hunter, a veteran of the music industry. If you are looking for a collection of songs by a bona fide bluesman, this is certainly it. The band is comprised of great performers, masters of their craft that really succeed in pulling together the timeless quality of the sound. Highlights include the title track, "Old Neighborhood," which establishes the big picture right off the bat with great guitar work, horns, female backing vocals, and a quality that puts you right in the room with the band. "Stormy" is a great little jazz number that features a delicate touch and nice progressions. "I Drink Muddy Waters" is a gritty track with an energetic, wailing vocal performance and quirky guitar solos. With "Old Neighborhood," Sherman Hunter has put together an incredible blues album full of great vocal performances and professional musicianship. "Where We Never Grow Old" by Nancy Chancey (Blues Artist from Georgia(GA))

"Where We Never Grow Old" by Nancy Chancey is an impressive country rock album with elements of blues, folk, and Americana from a powerful and talented singer. Nancy's voice booms confidently through the bluesy guitars and big beats. Her strong vocals are similar to Sheryl Crow, Jewel, or Bonnie Raitt. She also shows you a world of depth in her songwriting ability. Though the album is mostly upbeat, she'll make you feel pain, empowerment, and joy alike throughout this musical journey. The arrangements and musicianship are very good, complementing Nancy's strong vocals very nicely. The recordings are nice and crisp with simple production, allowing the instruments and vocals to nicely cut through in the recording. Highlights include the opener "One Day at a Time," setting the table nicely with a catchy chorus and a great little blues riff. "I Can't Live Like This" by Glenn Gordon (Blues Artist from Georgia(GA))

"I Can't Live Like This" is the debut single from Contemporary Jazz singer Glenn Gordon. The song is a snapshot of many different influences. The song features a nice mix of classic and modern Jazz styles, plus quite a bit of R&B flavor. Glenn's voice has some of the qualities of the great Soul singers and his delivery is passionate. The mood is very upbeat, as the song glides its way into your ears. It's one of those songs that brings a smile to your face within the first bar and you can't wipe it off until the last bar. Everything about this song is clear. The arrangement is fantastic. All of the instruments are very complementary to one another and the performances are great. The production quality is also very good - a very crisp recording and great final product. If you enjoy Teddy Pendergrass and Marvin Gaye, you'll enjoy this song.

"Quiet Town" by The Ground (Blues Artist from Ireland)

"Quiet Town" by The Ground is a conceptual experimental rock album. The musical story is based on a character named Andy whose life rapidly changes as he enters a life of drugs. The journey is a strange one for sure. You'll hear twisted blues elements combined with atmospheric sounds and dreamy female vocals. The arrangements push the envelope when it comes to bizarre. They are truly unique and creative. Highlights are the opener "Heart on Fire" with it's offbeat bluesy guitar riff, haunting vocals and overall tripping atmosphere. The title track "Quiet Town" has a nice vocal melody amidst a mish-mash of sounds. "Look at Life" wraps things up nicely with a bubbly beat and airy synths. If you enjoy experimental and unusual music or are tired of mainstream music, give this one a try.

"Concrete World and the Lover's Dream" by Anne Weiss (Blues Artist from Oregon(OR))

"Concrete World and the Lover's Dream" by Anne Weiss is a funk/blues solo female album with a poetic flair. Anne's voice is one of the more well known in Oregon and for good reason. She sings with her heart and soul. She possesses that great blues quality of grit and grace, and her lyrics are great life stories. Big name artists such as Janis Joplin and Tracy Chapman come to mind when listening to Anne's outstanding music. Anne's musical background is quite diverse and she brings that influence to the arrangements. Hints of urban and latin music are sprinkled throughout the CD, as well as a few other surprises. The band ties the sound together nicely, and are superior musicians. Highlights include "Special Delivery" with its assortment of sounds. You get great vocals, blues, street beats and Motown horns on this track. The title track "Concrete World and the Lover's Dream" makes "Blackbird" pop into your head in the beginning and then evolves into a dirge with a powerful message. Anne also does a real nice cover of Marvin Gaye's "What's Going On" on this CD. If you enjoy listening to outstanding songwriting and outstanding bluesy-rock female vocalists, give this CD a try.

“I Wonder To Myself” by Bob Long and Keith Miller (Blues Artist from United Kingdom)

"I Wonder To Myself" by Bob Long and Keith Miller is an authentic collection of old time blues tracks. This is a delightful and original rendition of old favorites. The vocals and use of guitar, harmonica, kazoo and jug give the CD that wonderfully delightful flavor of years ago when music gave the color of early America. The musicians are talented, and vocals are clear and sharp and have the feel of the era. The simple production of the mainly acoustic instruments on this CD, and mostly single-take recording is a perfect fit for the songs on this CD. Tommy Johnson's lyrics in "I Wonder To Myself" gives the common themes of the time (1929) when transportation was much slower. This song also gives hints of the racial problems of the era. The acoustic guitar, harmonica and kazoo musical accompaniment provide an outstanding musical landscape for this song. "Me and the Devil Blues" features an innovative harp sound that makes the impressive harp solo even more effective. "I Couldn't Help It" is a nice glimpse into the highlights of this CD, with a nice acoustic guitar groove, effective 2-part harmony vocals and scorching harmonica riffs. This CD is an excellent selection for the blues lover or for the collector of authentic music of American history.

"When She Whispers Your Name" by Buck 69 (Blues Artist from Ohio(OH))

"When She Whispers Your Name" by Buck 69 is blues rock guitar at it's best. This father and son duo bring their chops to the table with tons of energy and a world of talent. The band as a whole is tight and talented, backing the boys nicely. The production quality is great. You can certainly hear every instrument represented in each track. The vocals are very Clapton-esque, with that nice warm and a pleasantly raspy quality. Highlights are the opener "T-Town," which sets the tone nicely with a big sound, wailing guitars and a big attitude. "Misery" has a catchy chorus with nice female backing vocals. "Risk It All" mellows things out a bit with some nice work on the keys and variance in guitar sound. "Sex, Drugs, Ur Mom and Me" speaks for itself and absolutely shreds. "Join Hands" by The Mason Rack Band (Blues Artist from Australia)

"Join Hands" by The Mason Rack Band is a tremendous bluesy folk rock CD with a modern consciousness. The songs rely on simplicity in the arrangements to effectively allow Mason's wonderful vocals to take center stage. His rich, intimate, and breathy at times delivery reminds us of Ben Harper and has a very enjoyable quality that made us want to keep coming back to this CD to listen again and again. The songwriting on the CD is excellent as well, with relevant lyrics and memorable choruses. Highlights include the title track "Join Hands," which encompasses everything about the band's sound and features some creative lyrics. "Dust" gets extra bluesy with the vocals and some nice guitar progressions. "Friends" wraps things up in a big way with screeching vocals and an intense build. If you enjoy modern singer songwriters such as Ben Harper and Jack Johnson, you'll love this outstanding CD.

"The Colours of Blues" by Papasean Johnson (Blues Artist from Canada)

"The Colours of Blues" by Papasean Johnson is a swinging bar room blues album. Papasean's voice definitely has that "Old Soul" blues quality and is complemented well by his crafty guitar work and polished tone. Can't help but think of the late Stevie Ray Vaughan while listening to this one. Highlights are "Another Day," which rolls nicely, has some clever changes and features some slick steel guitar work."Sometimes I Wonder" takes you right down to the swamp with twangy rolling guitar and throaty vocals. "Jezebel" is a foot tapper with a tight little drum beat and a cool riff. If you like Stevie Ray Vaughan, Robert Johnson or Eric Clapton give this CD a try.

“Chicken Gumbo” by Lex & Joe (Blues Artist from Maine(ME))

"Chicken Gumbo" by Lex & Joe is a nicely spiced bowl of blues delight. Lyrically clever and witty, this CD has a way of leaving a deeply etched impression. "Memphis Women and Chicken" is a groovy and humorous tune that flaunts some soulful saxophone runs. Moreover, the vocals on this CD deliver the best mix of sass, attitude, and humor. Adding to the diverse nature of this album is the inclusion of some pleasantly redone cover tracks. Furthermore, the musicianship on "Ophelia" really steals the limelight. Wrapped in top notched production, "Chicken Gumbo" is as delicious as it sounds.

“Guitar Language” by Nebojsa Buhin Nebo (Blues artist from Croatia)

"Guitar Language" by Nebojsa Buhin Nebo is an impressive pop-rock/blues instrumental album. The musicianship on this CD is exceptional – powerful electric and acoustic guitars steal the limelight, backed by soothing drum arrangements. The pop-oriented "Remember Feat Marko Ramljak" stands out with its compelling lead guitar melody, beautiful violin accompaniments, and very epic climax. "Blues for You Feat Dimitar Božikov" assumes a softer, more soulful blues sound and carries a very vivid emotional life of its own. Moreover, the Latin-flavored "Big Girl Feat Ricardo Luque" is the only non-instrumental track on this CD, serving up some delightful vocals. Professional production finishes off this musically superior assembly. This CD is an excellent addition to the collection of any fan who enjoys rock guitar virtuoso music.

“Travelin’ Man” by Donald Ray Johnson (Blues artist from Canada)

"Travelin' Man" by Donald Ray Johnson is an all-around great blues album. Immediately grabbing the attention of listeners is the eclectic instrumentation – electric guitars, organs, and brass instruments mix to produce a uniquely compelling sound. Donald Ray's soulful tenor timbre is full of passion and control. Furthermore, the songwriting on this CD is crafted with highly relatable and poetic lyrics. The tear-inducing love ballad "Always On My Mind" ventures away from this CD's general upbeat pace, and allows Johnson to show off a softer, more personal side. "Last Two Dollars" shines with a hint of R&B flare, and draws listeners in with a powerful saxophone intro. Every aspect of "Travelin' Man" exemplifies professionalism. This is one CD that will not go unnoticed.

"City Walls" by Andy Gorwell (Blues artist from Australia)

"City Walls" by Andy Gorwell is an impressive bluesy rock CD. Andy's raspy vocals are very effective on these raw rock tracks. The production on the CD provides a cool, retro 60s rock feel. There was a lot of energy in the tracks we checked out. "Drifting Away from you" is a song about a relationship that effectively uses a slide guitar to evoke a strong emotional feel. "Be My Little Queeny" has a very catchy chorus, and includes an impressive bluesy guitar solo. If you enjoy the music of the Rolling Stones, you'll enjoy this CD. Check it out.

"Been To The River" by J R Roberts (Spiritual/Blues artist from Gainesville/Jacksonville, Florida (FL))

"Been To The River" by J R Roberts is a unique cross between traditional blues and today's contemporary Christian music. The musicianship, songwriting, and recording quality of this CD is very impressive. Opening with the blues-groove "You Are King," listeners are immediately introduced to J R's soulful and powerful vocals. It is clear that J R has quite a keenness for crafting memorable songs. Lyrically, these tunes are perfect for the congregational worship setting. J R showcases his unrefined country blues side with the very intimate title-track, "Been To The River." Moreover, "Jesus Be The Lord Of My Life" ventures into the adult-contemporary genre and demonstrates J R's vocal and musical versatility. All in all, this CD flaunts a wide appeal to fans of gospel, blues, jazz, and adult-contemporary and is well worth a listen.
